The Fire Alarm Technician Training Series is a seven-week course designed to present the skills and knowledge to produce competent fire alarm technicians who install, inspect, test and maintain fire alarm and signaling systems. The course is comprised of seven modules covering Ohm’s Law; fire alarm system fundamentals; requirements for documentation; fire alarm initiating devices and notification appliances; inspection, test and maintenance; and Protected Premises Fire Alarm Systems.

Fire Alarm Technician Training Series

The topics covered in this course are listed below:

  • Explain the principles of Ohm’s Law and be able to perform calculations to find for current, voltage and resistance.
  • Describe the fundamentals of fire alarm system requirements, personnel qualifications, equipment and system operation.
  • List the minimum documentation required for the design, installation, inspection, testing and maintenance of fire alarm systems and the proper completion of forms and reports.
  • Determine the purpose, characteristics and installation requirements of fire alarm manual, smoke- and heat-sensing initiation devices.
  • Recognized the type and location of fire alarm and signaling system notification appliances, and their characteristics for Public and Private mode.
  • Explain the requirements and functions of a Protected Premises Fire Alarm System to include the performance of signaling and notification circuits and emergency control functions.
  • Determine the methods and frequency of the inspection, testing and maintenance (ITM) of fire alarm systems and the responsibilities of the Technician and Owner to maintain and document systems.
